Hey there!
Ever started a user research study only to realise halfway through that you're not sure what you're actually trying to learn?
Or wrapped up research with a pile of insights but no clear direction on what to do next?
You're not alone.
The secret to focused, actionable research lies in crafting strong research objectives from the start.
Why Research Objectives matter
Think of research objectives as your North Star. They:
Communicate your research intentions clearly to stakeholders and team members
Serve as a compass to guide every decision you make as a researcher
Help determine participant criteria; who belongs in your study and who doesn't
Act as a stress-test during analysis; did you actually uncover what you set out to learn?
Define scope boundaries; what's in and what's out of your study
A simple 7-Step guide to craft strong Research Objectives
Step 1: Clarify the driving problem
What is the problem we are trying to solve as a team? What decision is this research meant to support? Use the 5Ws and H (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How) to understand the bigger picture and set the right focus.
Step 2: Review what's already known
Before you plan your study, check internal docs, past research, and team knowledge. Don't duplicate work. Build on what you already know.
Step 3: Identify what you still need to learn
With your team, list the open questions. Focus on what you need to learn to move forward confidently and build something users actually need.
Step 4: Sort questions into themes
Group similar questions together. Affinity sort sticky notes to uncover patterns and organise your knowledge gaps.
Step 5: Prioritise what matters most (and why)
Ask your team: What's most urgent or impactful to learn now? And why? Use dot voting and/or discussion to surface the top questions worth answering.
Step 6: Write clear Research Objectives
Turn priorities into objectives that are specific, measurable, and actionable. Each one should guide what you'll learn through the research.
Step 7: Get alignment before you begin
Share your objectives with stakeholders. Make sure everyone's on the same page and agrees on what success looks like.
Now you can start your research.
